phrase
Old Norse
Valhalla
lit. “hall of the slain”
Odin's great hall where warriors who died bravely in battle feast until Ragnarök.
Origin
The Valkyries — Odin's choosers of the slain — ferry the bravest fallen warriors to Valhalla, where they fight and feast each day in preparation for the final battle. The image fueled Viking warrior culture.
Modern usage
Used loosely for any heroic afterlife or hall of fame. 'See you in Valhalla' is a popular send-off in gaming and metal subcultures.
