A Viking warrior who fought in a trance-like rage.
Origin
The berserkers were elite Norse warriors said to enter battle in a frenzied, almost invulnerable state — possibly aided by ritual, alcohol, or psychoactive plants. The verb 'to go berserk' is a direct descendant.
Modern usage
'Going berserk' = losing all restraint. Common in sports commentary, gaming, and any description of unhinged behavior.
