Phoenix

A mythical bird that burns to ash and is reborn from it โ€” the canonical symbol of comeback and renewal.

Origin

Described by Herodotus and later writers: a single bird that lives for centuries, builds a pyre of aromatic wood, immolates itself, and is reborn from the ashes. The image was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of resurrection and by countless cities (Atlanta, San Francisco) as a symbol of recovery after disaster.

Modern usage

Sports comebacks, restructured companies, ex-addicts, ex-presidents โ€” anything that rebuilds itself from ruin is 'rising from the ashes' or 'a phoenix.' Harry Potter and a thousand band names cemented the image for younger readers.

In the wild

After the bankruptcy, the studio came back like a phoenix.โ€” entertainment press
