concept
Love Languages
Gary Chapman's framework: five ways people prefer to give and receive affection.
Origin
From Gary Chapman's 1992 book The 5 Love Languages: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. Chapman, a pastor and marriage counselor, argued couples often miscommunicate care because they speak different 'languages'. The framework lacks rigorous psychological backing but has had a huge cultural footprint.
Modern usage
Universally referenced โ including by people who haven't read the book and don't know it's Christian-counseling literature. 'What's your love language?' is standard small talk on dates and in HR away-days alike.
