phrase
Wild West
A frontier where rules are scarce, fortunes are made fast, and the strong set the terms.
Origin
The American West of roughly 1865โ1895 โ post-Civil War, pre-statehood for many territories. The actual lawlessness was partial and uneven, but dime novels, Buffalo Bill's Wild West shows, and a century of Hollywood Westerns cemented the image of an ungoverned frontier with revolvers, saloons, and quick deals.
Modern usage
Applied to any unregulated arena โ early internet, crypto, AI, frontier markets. Usually a warning, occasionally a boast.
In the wild
The early DeFi space was the Wild West.โ tech press
