Weltanschauung
/ˈvɛltʔanˌʃaʊʊŋ/
lit. “world-view”
A comprehensive, ideologically loaded way of seeing the world.
Origin
Coined by Immanuel Kant in the late 18th century, then developed by 19th-century German philosophers. Heavier than the English 'worldview' — it implies a totalizing, philosophical or political system, not just personal opinions.
Modern usage
Used in philosophy, political theory, and theology. In casual English, 'worldview' usually does the job; 'Weltanschauung' is reserved for emphasis or pretension.
