Origin

Coined in the prologue of Romeo and Juliet: 'a pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life.' The astrological implication is that their stars are working against them.

Modern usage

Used (often half-seriously) for any love story whose obstacles feel cosmic. Also appears in song titles and YA novels.
