Origin
The medical sense โ CPR, defibrillation, restoring breathing โ became the dominant meaning in the 20th century. The metaphorical sense (reviving brands, careers, treaties) has always co-existed with it.
Modern usage
Common in business and politics. 'Resuscitate the deal', 'resuscitate the franchise'. Slightly more dramatic than 'revive' or 'restart'.
