phrase
Out of Left Field
Unexpected and from an unusual source.
Origin
From American baseball. Origins are disputed โ one theory is that left fielders, having less to do than right fielders in many ballparks, were viewed as the eccentric position; another is that throws from left field to first base were so long they were considered surprising. Either way, the metaphor was firmly established by the mid-20th century.
Modern usage
Universal in casual speech โ meetings, conversations, plot twists. Interchangeable with 'out of nowhere' but with a bit more flair.
