The One Ring

Power that corrupts everyone who tries to use it, no matter their intentions.

Origin

In The Lord of the Rings, the One Ring grants enormous power but inevitably corrupts its bearer. The plot is built around the only way to deal with it: destroying it, not using it.

Modern usage

Used in arguments about technology, weapons, and centralized power. 'You can't use the Ring' is a common shorthand for 'don't try to wield this tool, even for good.'
