phrase
One-Hit Wonder
An artist, product, or person known for a single famous output and nothing else.
Origin
The phrase entered English in the 1970s music industry, where bands with one chart-topper and no follow-up were the visible majority. Whole compilation albums and VH1 specials were built around the category. The phrase migrated into business and politics with the same meaning.
Modern usage
Used in tech ('a one-hit-wonder startup'), film ('a one-hit-wonder director'), even relationships. Carries a sympathetic note โ the hit is real, the rest is the problem.
