Narcissus

The youth who fell in love with his own reflection and wasted away beside it.

Origin

A beautiful young hunter who rejected every suitor. As punishment, he was led to a pool, saw his reflection, and was unable to look away until he died there. A flower grew on the spot.

Modern usage

The root of narcissism โ€” used in psychology and casually for self-obsession, vanity, and an inability to love anyone but the mirror.
