Marcus Aurelius

The philosopher emperor whose private notebook became a foundational Stoic text.

Origin

Emperor of Rome from 161 to 180 CE. His private journal, Meditations, was never meant for publication but survived to become the most-read Stoic work in modern self-improvement culture.

Modern usage

Heavily cited in stoicism circles, productivity blogs, and self-help. 'Marcus saidโ€ฆ' is a tell that someone has read Ryan Holiday.
