Hat Trick
Three successes in a row in a single performance.
Origin
Coined in 1858 in English cricket: H. H. Stephenson took three wickets in three consecutive balls and was awarded a new hat by his club. The term migrated to ice hockey (three goals in a game โ fans throw hats onto the ice) and from there to soccer, football, and figurative use.
Modern usage
Used for any rapid trio of achievements โ three deals closed, three awards won, three exes called.
