Hat Trick

Three successes in a row in a single performance.

Origin

Coined in 1858 in English cricket: H. H. Stephenson took three wickets in three consecutive balls and was awarded a new hat by his club. The term migrated to ice hockey (three goals in a game โ€” fans throw hats onto the ice) and from there to soccer, football, and figurative use.

Modern usage

Used for any rapid trio of achievements โ€” three deals closed, three awards won, three exes called.
