phrase
Friend Zone
Being kept as a friend by someone you want a romantic relationship with.
Origin
Popularized by a 1994 episode of Friends in which Ross is described as 'mayor of the friend zone' for Rachel. The term spread through dating advice and pickup-artist subcultures in the 2000s and 2010s โ sometimes innocuously, sometimes with overtones of entitlement that have made it a contested phrase.
Modern usage
Used self-deprecatingly ('I got friend-zoned again') and critically (the framing assumes friendship is a lesser outcome). Younger users are increasingly skeptical of the concept entirely.
