Dorian Gray

Someone who stays outwardly young and beautiful while their inner self decays.

Origin

The protagonist of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890). Dorian's portrait ages and absorbs every consequence of his vices while he remains physically unchanged. When the painting is finally destroyed, the accumulated corruption returns to him at once.

Modern usage

'A Dorian Gray situation' is now standard shorthand for a public figure or institution whose polished image hides decay โ€” celebrities aging suspiciously well, companies whose reputation outpaces their reality. Often invoked alongside discussion of plastic surgery, brand management, and AI-generated avatars.
