Offering something valuable to those who can't appreciate it.

Also from the Sermon on the Mount: 'Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine.' A warning against wasted sincerity.

Used with a sting — usually by someone who feels their effort, insight, or art is being squandered on the wrong audience.
