The origin event of anything โ the moment it all started.
Origin
The cosmological theory that the universe began ~13.8 billion years ago in a hot dense state and has been expanding ever since. The name was coined dismissively by physicist Fred Hoyle in a 1949 BBC broadcast โ Hoyle preferred a steady-state universe โ but the name stuck. The CBS sitcom (2007โ2019) didn't hurt its visibility.
Modern usage
Borrowed for any origin story โ a company's big bang, an industry's big bang, the big bang of a relationship.
